Who wins the league at Old Trafford 2009?

For most of this season I’ve hoped that the game at Old Trafford was not going to be in the least bit important for either us or them.

At Xmas, even with Cesc and Theo out injured I still believed that there was a chance that we could purr away from the rest if only Arsene would pick the right team.

I sat in the freezing cold at the Emirates Stadium and watched in amazement as our league title hopes went down the pan. Our dip in goal scoring prowess coincided with Aston Villas continuing ability to grind out a result and when I came away from the West Ham game at the end of January I wanted to cry, not only from the cold but from real sadness at how we hadn’t been able to score. By the end of February we were fighting to be in the top four and even that was beginning to look beyond us.

This game is now important as both Liverpool and ManU have missed chances to gain significant points on the other and although its not really tight at the top a draw for ManU will hand them the title – in this fixture – against us – the mighty Arsenal.

We WON the title at Old Trafford in exhilarating style in 2002 with a goal  from SylvainWiltord. I can still conjure up the goosebumps as the our  banner was unfurled at the away end that read  ‘Champions Section’   and the tears prick my eyes  as I remember the pride in hearing the sound of celebrating gooners out in force in Palmers Green that night. Horns blasting. Oh what a night!!!!!

Arsene – this month has so far been full of disappointments for us gooners, I’m sure you’ll not want to be  handing the title to Man U – on their ground – after they kicked us out of the Champs Lge only a few days ago. Lets make them work a little harder.

Arsene –  please think about your team selection and your tactics and remember there are thousands of us who will have a terrible weekend (again) if we lose. I hope you’ll do your best.

    Morning

I kinda wish it wasn’t Man U today but it is……I’m off for some well-deserved zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz’s

See you in the morn 😉

  2. kelsey says:

    Good Morning all.

Nicely put peaches, and there are some key sentences in your post.I can’t remember a game against these two great sides for many a year, when all that is at stake for us is to at the very least compete, hopefully show that the gulf between us is not as great as it appeared a few days ago,and team selection and how the players react will be something I will be paricularly looking at.
AW has said he will send out his strongest team, and there are certain players who I will be watching carefully.
Fabianski, has had a torrid time lately and it is not ideal for his next match to be at OT.
Theo, completely taken out of both games against United,I am looking for an improved performance.
Then what could be our trump card, the mighty Arshavin, will he make the difference we are crying out for with his intelligence and clinical passing.
Hopefully we don’t go there for a draw and play 4-5-1 but on the other hand though a draw would still hand the title to United,it would at least save some face.Be under no illusion,Fergie will go out to win today and put the title to bed in front of the Home support, and I have a feeling it will be achieved, but hopefully we will give a performance that shows the players out there are truly good enough and fully committed to Arsenal.

Another team selection is that i believe Ade will start,to put him in the shop window for maybe the last time, though personally I would prefer bedntner to start or even RVP.
Silvestre must be dropped and Djorou must be given another chance, and Nasri needs to stamp more authority to his game.
    My team would be,
    Fabianski,
    Sagna
    Toure
    Djorou
    Gibbs,
    Nasri,
    Song
    Cesc
    Arshavin
    RVP
    Bedntner
    Walcott.

Just out of interst i looked up our lowest league attendence and it was in May 1965 against Leeds,we lost 0-3,the crowd was 4554,and we finished 14th. that year.

    Djourou

    I forgot,how did the gig go last night,peaches ?

I had a call las night that our 4’s semi final in the Andalucian Championships has been re arranged to 14.00 our time today,so I will miss the match.

I am relying on a true assessment from all of you.3.5 hours in 27 degrees is no fun, but win or lose we are guaranteed a place in the National Championships in September, as semi-finalists upwards get in.

  4. kelsey says:

Arshavin has a few choice opinions on women drivers: “I would never give driving lessons to women. We need to build a few new roads for them. Why because you never know what to expect from them,” he said.

    Well peaches,rico and Irish,any response.

  5. Rasputin says:

    Morning ‘Peachbums’,

Good post, what more is there to say about this game. I’ve given up with match predictions. I am taking up manager predictions…… most of what AW says over the summer is going to upset and disappoint us….. but we will still want him as manager – how sad is that? 😦

Good luck with the bowls Kelsey. Remember the old cricketing sledging tactics – can I borrow your brain mate…I’m building an idiot… (from an aussie to Phil Tuffnel originally)

  6. Big Raddy says:

Very funny Rasputin (can I call you Ras..?)

I hope AW rests Theo. Plays a front 3 of AA, RvP and Ade. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Eboue get a start in place of Nasri, to give Sagna some back-up.

Peaches. Warren’s filing ! Impossible… And you know who Hawkwind are now, so the lesson must have worked 😉

  7. peachesgooner says:

    Morning rasp and kelsey

    rasp – Peachbums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kelsey – who would you drop from your starting 12?

arshavin – thats the trouble with small men – much too opiniated – but I do love them 🙂

  8. Rasputin says:

    Morning Raddy, peaches et al

Andrey’s our spokesman. Peaches…have you read what he’s said about women drivers. PC hasn’t reached Russia yet 😉

  9. peachesgooner says:

Morning raddy – everything about that record shop makes me smile now. The singing daughter is a music geek and a huge fan of the film Empire Records, she’s so jealous that I worked in a little record store – the kind she loves to visit now.

She and and her band are brilliant – the gig was fantastic. They’re off to the states again to do a couple of gigs in New York and Chicago, more mixing of the album and then back to perform at Glastonbury.

  10. Rasputin says:

 didn’t work – how do you do that liyyle devil face thing?

  11. Rasputin says:

    Raddy,

Call me Ras, rasp, numbnuts anything you like 😛

  12. kelsey says:

Good question peaches. My starting 12 is our secret weapon.OK i fecked up.I would drop Cesc, surprise you does it.He is burnt out,his body language is wrong, but it won’t happen as he is the captain. The likely ommission will be bedntner, because he is in form.

  13. peachesgooner says:

yes rasp – kelsey put it in already 😳

  14. kelsey says:

    Call me Kel,
    ethan does 😉

  15. Rasputin says:

Don’t you like ‘peachbums’ – I thought it just about summed us up

  16. peachesgooner says:

Hi kelsey – its such a great starting 12 – maybe we could start a new trend.

Actually why not drop Fabianski and play school boy style – anyone drops in as goalie when needed – just don’t give the ball away…….

  17. peachesgooner says:

rasp – You’ll have to ask the others if theirs is peachy – I’m too shy 😳

  18. Rasputin says:

Sorry Kelsey, I did read your comment before I repeated it to peaches but went off for a cup of tea and the dementia set in. Peachbums is better than sagas though 🙂

The  didn’t work, how do you do that little devi face thingy?

  19. Rasputin says:

Apparently AW’s Q&A session was heavily edited before it went out on ATV and all the contentious stuff was cut. You’re right peaches, it is just one big cheesy propaganda (propergander 🙂 ) site..

  20. peachesgooner says:

Did anyone see the Q&A – I’ve sky+’d it – is that a recording? I always say taped but of course nothing is taped anymore ……….is there a new word for that?

  21. peachesgooner says:

All the contentious stuff was cut!!!!!!!!

How did you know I was gonna ask that question rasp – you answered before I asked it….

    Yes please 😉

  22. Rasputin says:

Its a bloody shame football is a business, we could have as many new players as we want if it was just a sport. Simon Jordan always says that buying a football club is throwing money down the drain and it does appear that when millionaire fans (not billionaires like Roman) buy clubs they usually fail. I hadn’t realised AW was primarily a businessman who manages football clubs (irony!!)

  23. kelsey says:

see you later guys, can’t wait for the Eurovision Song Contest (yawn)tonight.

    Rasp,

owning a football club is a mixture of passion and power and ego unless as you rightly say we are talking about billionaires. As a business the majority are doomed to failure.

  24. Rasputin says:

Have a good day Kelsey..Bowl ’em over 😛

  25. peachesgooner says:

I think AW assumed that mantle out of necessity. The move to the Emirates must have put him under new pressure and when David Dein left he had even more responsibility.

Just read something that reminded me to cheer up – Arshavin is going to play today and thats an exciting prospect 😆

  26. peachesgooner says:

Kelsey – best of luck to you and the team 🙂

  27. Rasputin says:

Peaches…. most managers just look after the football and leave other matters to the ownership/board. AW seems to take far too much on himself. He speaks for every aspect of the club. You don’t hear Raffa talking political spin. In fact, I’d go as far to say that most managers appear to be slightly at odds with the ownership and always want more funds for players, but then AW is definitely not ‘most managers’

  28. peachesgooner says:

Exactly rasp – hes not most managers. But he did do less when DD was around……

I can see him talking with Kroenke but I just can’t picture him sitting chatting with Usmanov – everything about how the man looks is so unappealing

  29. Rasputin says:

    More like ‘putusoffmanov’ then 😉

  30. peachesgooner says:

I know looks shouldn’t come into it and hes got ooooooodles of money and he could be a really nice bloke but yuuuuuuuuuk – hes a slim-ball

  31. peachesgooner says:

    mine didn’t work either

    ‘putusoffmanov’ like it 😉

  32. peachesgooner says:

I’m going to hunt for a devil – be back in a min

  33. peachesgooner says:

    Can’t find one – rico’ll know 😉

  34. peachesgooner says:

All alone – back in a while 🙂

  35. Rasputin says:

Kroenke may be the ‘Messiah’ As you say, he is a far more appealling character than Usmanov. I think its inevitable that there will be a takeover sooner or later and we have to just hope that whoever holds the reins, loves football and winning as much as profit…. I really am naive aren’t I?

  36. peachesgooner says:

rasp – thats not naive, thats positive thinking 🙂

  37. peachesgooner says:

    Heres the team

    Fabianski

    Sagna Toure Song Gibbs

    Diaby? Denilson Cesc Nasri

    Arsh van Persie

  38. Irishgunner says:

    C’MON YOU GOONERS 👿

  39. Irishgunner says:

Or this one, didn’t mean to look angry

    C’MON YOU GOONERS 😈

  40. Irishgunner says:

Rasputin – the icons you are looking for is

    twisted = 😈

    evil = 👿

  41. Irishgunner says:

Guys apparently Adebayor is not in the squad – anyone confirm??

  42. Irishgunner says:

Well its confirmed – I never checked the subs bench 😳

  43. Rasputin says:

    Thanks Irish,

A good first half from us and I’ve got to go out and miss the second 😦

Adebayor not in squad…should be read between the lines. He’s been interviewed and said that the fans boo him even when he scores….not true

  44. Rasputin says:

Arshavins made a difference, but its a much better overall team performance. Diaby’s made some good tackles but has also given the ball away too much = his standard game.

We often pass it out wide and slow down the attack when we could get into the box with the ball at our feet as AA often tries does.

  45. Irishgunner says:

Bye Bye Adebayor – wonder how much we’ll get. He didn’t look interested for ages so I don’t care. I was harsh on Eboue at the start of the season but at least he has pulled his socks up and puts in effort.

Pity you have to go out – I do still hope we can rain on their parade 😀

  46. peachesgooner says:

All we had to do was score and it might have livened up the game. Still they are worthy winners of the title and we have come out of that with some pride at least.

I wonder how many times Theo kicked the ball when he came on 😦

Much better game from Cesc I thought.

Really the mancs just sat back and let their front boys try and pick us off when they had the chance. They would have had to go for it if we’d have scored.

    Can’t be too unhappy 😉

  47. Irishgunner says:

The Mancs played for a draw really, they looked happy enough to sit back.

Still – people said we’d get thrashed so I’ll take the point.

    Song did well.

The ref did well too didn’t he?? *where’s the sarcasm button?*

  48. peachesgooner says:

Hiya – i’ve been flying around to see what everyone elses take was on the game.

I thought Song did well too and Denilson.

Some of the clever flicks didn’t come off today, one twos into the box could’ve made a difference if they’d have worked. I wish he’d played 4-4-2 though, will we ever play 4-4-2 again I wonder 🙂

  49. Irishgunner says:

I hope so – RvP can’t do the loan striker role, now if we had Benzema we could do it 😉

    Is Adebayor gone??

  50. peachesgooner says:

    I’m assuming he’s gonna go arn’t you??

Benzema – have you mentioned him before 😉

Tevez looked like he reckoned he’d be gone didn’t he, maybe he’d like to play in mid-field for us along-side Cesc – we could do with that engine 🙂

  51. Irishgunner says:

Yep – he seems to sound a bit sorry for himself too. Did you see the BBC interview?

No matter what he does he can’t seem to win back the fans….

    1) Don’t flirt with other clubs
    2) Don’t ask for huge money and did start playing crap
    3) Don’t start flirting with more clubs
    4) Stop being offside
    5) Run
    6) Stop grinning like an idiot
    7) Stop talking about AC Milan

    And so on it goes.

Tevez is more a second striker though isn’t he?

  52. peachesgooner says:

I know, but Arsene loves the challenge of putting square pegs in round holes 🙂

Buy him as a striker and put him in mid-field 😆

  53. peachesgooner says:

I have no sympathy for Ade, the rubbish that came out of his mouth while he was flirting with AC Milan in the summer and then to want £80,000 a week. He was lucky last season – if he was a proper striker he’d had scored 50 with amount of chances that were created for him.

And his being off-side so often is now legendary 🙂

  54. Irishgunner says:

    😆

  55. Irishgunner says:

    Hull are 1-0 down 😆

  56. peachesgooner says:

Irish – I have to take a client plant shopping, catch you later – we’ll all be about then.

    Come on Bolton 😉

  57. Irishgunner says:

Enjoy – I’m going to the pub in a while so I’ll see ye soon 😀

  58. kelsey says:

    Hello,
i am back, did i miss much.By all accounts we played quite well,a big improvement on last week, but again no end product.I read Ade’s 6 minute interview on Football Focus, and it looks like he is gone, blaming the fans, saying they don’t like him,but no remorse from him.
    Why didn’t Theo play,or did he ?

    We won 🙂 🙂 🙂

By the way who actually is The fat Controller on AR I am getting confused as he who cannot be mentioned seems to be popping up at our arch enemy’s site with invites.

  59. kelsey says:

    Peaches,
funny you should mention plants,as you know there are several meanings to the word plant 😉

  60. peachesgooner says:

Its very quiet about the place now – too many people in shock seeing Man U lift the trophy again maybe….

kelsey – how fantastic that you won your bowls – many congratulations to you and the team 😆

  61. kelsey says:

    http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/sport/309823/Dutch-striker-stalls-on-new-deal-at-Arsenal.html

    Good Morning,

Unfortunately this seems to add weight to what I was told 2 weeks ago.

  62. Big Raddy says:

Kelsey. Well done on the win.

RvP? Don’t really care one way or the other.

Fine performance yesterday. I was concerned that given the occasion MU would go to town, instead we took control early, stayed calm and gave them no space to play.

I was very pleased to see us play higher up the pitch, plus Sagna had Rooney tracking back for most of the game, thereby reducing their threat. Ronaldo didn’t seem interested after he got kicked by Cesc (?). It should be noted that Fabianski didn’t make a save. Song was excellent in his new role, which is good and bad – I hope AW doesn’t think he has his new CB.

Up front … we showed very little, but MU have a superb defence. Had Cesc buried his chance, OT would have been silenced.

One could argue that MU didn’t try, but I would argue that SAF would never allow that to happen – we just played well.

  63. peachesgooner says:

    Morning all
