Are we in the same league as Barcelona?

Barca comprehensively outplayed Manchester United in the Champions League final. The old adage “football was the winner” seems appropriate. The pundits have been variously analysing and dissecting the game and usually at some point, Arsenal’s name is offered as the only side in the PL that passes the ball and tries to produce the ‘total football’ of Barca………  so how do the two sides compare?

The players….

To compare the Barca team that played in the final with a theoretical ‘first team’ that AW would pick this season comprising; Almunia, Sagna, Toure, Gallas, Clichy, Walcott, Denilson, Fabregas, Arshavin, Van Persie, Adebayor

Average age… Arsenal 25; Barca 26

Average height… Arsenal 5ft 10ins; Barca 5ft 10 ins

Average height of centre backs… Arsenal 6ft 0ins; Barca 6ft 3ins

Home nationality… Arsenal 1; Barca 6

Internationals… Arsenal 7;  Barca 9

Goals from strikers… Arsenal 36;  Barca 50

Trophies in the last four years…. Arsenal 0;  Barca, 3 League titles, 1 Domestic cup, 2 Champions league

You can interpret these statistics in a number of ways and they don’t take into account the all-important financial constraints that have dictated Arsenal’s transfer policy in recent years. But if you want to be the best, you have to compare yourself with the best.

You could speculate how many of the Arsenal team would get into the Barca side? but that’s not particularly helpful – its about the team.

Most of the Barca players would have scored an 8 for their performance in the final whereas manu’s players only merited a 6.

A lot of supporters would say we are only a couple of players off of a Premiership winning side, others would simply argue that we should support the players we have and by that faith alone, they will develop into the best.

The fact is that Barca know how to win. They have total belief that their style of football can beat anyone and this comes from the history and culture of their football and the quality of the players they produce. We had those qualities with the ‘Invincibles’ and we can achieve them again. The last couple of seasons have been patchy due to loss of personnel and injuries. From this point forward, we need to rebuild the confidence and reinforce the quality of the squad.

  1. Big Raddy says:

    Very good post Rasputin.

Some interesting stats… I agree that Barca have to be our benchmark, and if AW says that we are not far off, then he is deluded.

I am surprised at our average age, I thought it would be lower. It shows AW’s argument about our very young side is hogwash. We have experience, but lack real ‘winners’. It is all well and good for RvP to say that he wants to play in a winning team, but it shows an astonishing arrogance (surprising because he seems a good chap (post-baby)). He is a part of this team, and I would ask him to look in his personal trophy cabinet to see if he is a ‘winner’…… Did you know RvP lives in Goffs Oak?

  2. Rasputin says:

    Morning Raddy,

I didn’t know RVP was local – I drive through Goffs Oak most mornings…. I’ll keep an eye out and tell him to sign or go do a ‘Hleb’ shall I 😉

Yes the average age and average height are about the same although I had to show that their two centrebacks are 3 inches taller.

Six of their players are spanish by birth and a 7th has spanish as his first language so communication on the pitch must be good – although you do get the impression that they play by telepathy – come to think of it, that’s another thing they have in common with the Invincibles

  3. peachesgooner says:

    Hey rasp – you’re a star – well done 😆

  4. peachesgooner says:

……..and for your next trick, see if you can put raddy’s old post onto today cos it had some interesting points – I’m not being condescending there 😉

  5. Rasputin says:

Thanks Peaches – I’m beginning to get the hang of it now. I have published catalogues and articles using Quark, Pagemaker and PagePlus and they give you total control over the appearance of a document. Here it’s far more limited and all about knowing a few basic tricks to make it more readable.

  6. peachesgooner says:

Peaches – I’m not clever enough to move a comment from an old post to a new post, so I’ve cut and pasted Raddy’s words…. as follows:

“Berbatov? Do you think he is happy to have left London? OK , he doesn’t have to play at SWL, but at least he got a gig there.

I think about him because he is what £30m buys today – a bench player. £32m buys you a player who can raise the team to 10th in the Prem. A £20m buys a striker who is not good enough for a team in 10th place and gets loaned out !!

Oh, and £15m buys a winger who can’t even get a bench spot at a club that finished below Fulham, and level on points with a bankrupt WHU !

What this shows is what a fantastic buy Arshavin is. But also, how careful AW has to be in summer with his limited budget.

  7. Rasputin says:

On Raddy’s comment regarding expenditure, we’re being linked with Barry again (Daily Star ppphhhmmppphh!) for 12 million – that doesn’t seem like the sort of purchase I’d expect AW to be considering.

  8. Rasputin says:

I’m off for a couple of hours to cycle around the Hertfordshire hills with my son to a little country pub … catch up later

  9. peachesgooner says:

rasp – I do enough talking to myself on here – you’ve posted a comment from you while in my log-in, I’ll see if I can change it later.

Have a lovely bike ride – factor 50 please 😆

  10. Irishgunner says:

Barry would be no more than £7-8mil, he is on the last year of his contract and O’Neill promised him he wouldn’t stand in his way.

  11. Rasputin says:

Hi Irish – but would you take him, is he better than an improving Song?…. or maybe Arteta or Alonso?

  12. Irishgunner says:

I’d take Alonso if we could get him, but for £7mil yes I would take Barry.

I don’t think Song is ready yet, he is caught out of position a bit, besides he’d be off to the ACN in january.

  13. Rasputin says:

I agree Irish. I don’t quite understand why we put such effort (or so it appeared) into buying Inler last summer. I haven’t seen that much of him, but what I saw didn’t impress particularly.

I like Veloso if we can tame his nightclub habit or the beast of Albania 👿

  14. Irishgunner says:

I would take someone with a bit of quality to be honest.

Barry isn’t world class by any means but he has vast EPL experience and will want to prove himself and for £7-8mil would be more than worth it.

  15. Rasputin says:

Maybe he’s not after any of them if the report below is to be believed – this has the flavour of a tyypical Arsene purchase…

“According to reports in the German press Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is tracking VFL Wolfsburg defensive midfielder Christian Genter, nicknamed the ‘new Kaiser,’ after First Team Coach and close confidant Boro Primorac recommended the star after the Frenchman sent Primorac to watch Eden Dzeko last weekend.

The 23-year-old has been the unsung hero of the Wolfsburg side that has won the Bundesliga for the first time in their history. Genter has been at Wolfsburg since 2007, playing 50 games and scoring seven goals.

Genter was only recently called up to the German national team for the first time for the summer tour of Asia. The midfield stalwart was on a two-year loan with Wolfsburg from VFB Stuttgart, but the destroyer made the deal permanent last August.”

  16. Irishgunner says:

Least he has some games under his belt.

  17. Irishgunner says:

“Reports from Spain suggest Arsenal and Liverpool have entered the race to sign Chile international Matías Fernández.

Bolton Wanderers have made already made a bid for the Villarreal star and Blackburn Rovers have made their interest in the player known, according to the player’s agent.

“After the game against Bolivia, Matias will go on holiday and we have until August 31 to look at the situation,” said Alejandro Santiesteban, who represents Fernández.

“There is an offer from Bolton Wanderers and a possibility from Blackburn where Villanueva was.”

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder has a €50m release clause in his contract but, as none of the interested clubs are prepared to pay that amount, he’s expected to be sold for much less.”

    FFS – you don’t say. €50million 🙄

  18. Rasputin says:

I’d be very surprised if we bought anyone early in the transfer window, it doesn’t appear to be our style. Sniffing out players who are just about to realise their potential and are sub 10 million but aren’t yet on the radar of the bigger clubs is Arsene’s forte.

I don’t think the purchase of AA was the norm, and maybe there is some truth in the rumour that Gazidis was the main architect of the deal. Eithr way, AA looks like a bargain and must already be earning us bucketloads from the merchandising.

  19. Rasputin says:

We’d have to sell the whole squad to afford him Irish 😆

  20. Irishgunner says:

Still though we have bought Hleb, Rosicky and Eduardo whose potential was already known to a degree.

I’m really putting my trust in Gazidis been a good deal maker, he’s had plenty of experience at doing it.

  21. peachesgooner says:

    Hi all

Hope everyone is well – I’ve had to be a Garden Designer today and have only popped in to say hi, taking clients to see an old design in a few minutes and then home to a glass of red in my garden hopefully while the sun is still shining.

rasp – have you managed to find a minute to make that phone-call? Let me know please 🙂

  22. peachesgooner says:

    Hello – anyone about 🙂

  23. kelsey says:

I am, just read the new post……love the title tres chic.

I have all the credentials to play in midfield or attack but alas 35 years too late, but i speak French.

  24. kelsey says:

have you phoned or not 😉

  25. kelsey says:

    Before you ask, don’t.

  26. kelsey says:

Put me down for 3-0 please.

  27. peachesgooner says:

Hello – have you had a nice day kelsey 🙂

Who knows if hes phoned, its obviously enough that he wrote the post…………….

  28. peachesgooner says:

    3-0 to who, for what……..

Everton v Chavs?………now that would be something wouldn’t it 😆

  29. kelsey says:

alright,i might as well tell all. Saw the dentist today, got the final estimate 3200 euros.Fine i said, “how long will it take” he said “20 minutes” i said “******”.

  30. peachesgooner says:

Whats been happening today kel – have you been visiting……….

  31. peachesgooner says:

Oh no poor you – are you alright ……..

  32. kelsey says:

    The toffees of course

are we making any progress, even at snail’s place.

Where is the park keeper he writes a very nice post, ever thought of changing professions.

  33. kelsey says:

oh yes,i got over the shock, the business end is next thursday.

  34. kelsey says:

    kel…..getting personal now eh 😉

  35. peachesgooner says:

the park keeper went out on his bike earlier and did return to have a chat to irish this afternoon – not to me sadly 😦

  36. peachesgooner says:

I thought you liked being called kel – kel 😆

  37. kelsey says:

i do like being called kel but i don’t want to harm my relationship with ethan.

he went out on his bike eh, seems to be the fashion these days 😉

  38. kelsey says:

shall we go on britain’s got talent 🙂

if stavros can do it,why not.

  39. peachesgooner says:

‘on your bike’ – you’re right its has a certain ring to it 😉

  40. kelsey says:

have to go out now for a little while. ….laters.

  41. peachesgooner says:

    can you play sax…..:)

Last night BGT was hilarious I thought……..

  42. peachesgooner says:

    oh no, all alone………

rico – are you ok, you havn’t checked in today

  43. Rasputin says:

Oi – you all been talking to me behind my back?

Where’s rico been? Was it something I said 😦

  44. peachesgooner says:

She went down the road early this morning and hasn’t been seen since.

Gareth Barry – do we want him? I thought he wanted to go to Liverpool – ‘dream move’ – and now he might be coming to us………..

  45. Rasputin says:

Yes, I can’t take Barry seriously. I know I’m beig naive but I want players who want to play for us above any other club. Ryan Babel said he’d always wanted to play for us when we showed interest, until pool came in for him and then, all of a sudden he was a lifelong pool fan. Robbie Keane must feel like a plonker. “Pool is the only club I’d leave totnum for” and six months later he’s back. I think his caravan was still parked in WHL 😕

  46. peachesgooner says:

I don’t think scummers can really be taken seriously anyway – look at David Bentley 🙂 🙂 🙂

  47. Rasputin says:

Peaches – I hope we/you have made it abundantly clear that we don’t want any cross-referencing to other sites. I don’t want to lose any friends. I haven’t seen a problem on here today but it seems rife elsewhere. I don’t know if people can accept that you’re just offering a ‘venue’ for arsenal chat and friendly banter without any unpleasantness.

  48. peachesgooner says:

I don’t want other sites to be named on Peaches Pad – if bloggers have an issue with another site they should put their comments on that site IMO not whinge on here.

  49. Rasputin says:

I get the feeling we get caught in the crossfire sometimes however hard we try to avoid this kind of stuff 😦

  50. peachesgooner says:

But other sites are only comprised of other peoples opinions – its not worth quoting anything as its all conjecture…….

  51. Rasputin says:

    Morning peachbums…….

This morning’s gossip from the Mirror – anyone got a pinch of salt I can borrow 😉

“Arsene Wenger is ready to off-load Emmanuel Eboue as part of a major shake-up of his squad this summer.

Gunners boss Wenger is also preparing to sell off his unsettled striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

And Italian clubs AC Milan and Juventus are both interested in signing former captain William Gallas.

But Eboue is the surprise name as a potential departure after the Ivory Coast utility man recovered from being jeered by Arsenal fans earlier in the season.

Atletico Madrid are interested in taking Eboue away from the Emirates.”

  52. Rasputin says:

This is yesterday’s story from the Mail – I’ll eat my shorts of Bolton get Veloso at all, let alone at the cut-price of £6m…….

“Bolton are lining up a fresh £6million bid for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso.
Manager Gary Megson made a £12m move for the 23-year-old in January but is looking to land the Portugal international for a cheaper price as his contract runs down.”

  53. Big Raddy says:

That Veloso story is obviously pants/shorts (depends which side of the pond one comes from !)

ANd the Ebway rumour? I thought he had just signed a new contract. Where does this rubbish come from? Tired imaginations I guess.

Britain’s got Talent. We don’t get the programme here, but we do get Americas got talent. What is clear is the total lack of talent – there are tens of thousands of professional musicians, dancers, magicians etc etc who have infinitely more talent than these people, yet they don’t get a chance.

So…. I YouTubed the British ‘talent’. Is a Fat Cypriot doing a very poor impression of Riverdance the best UK has to offer? OK, I see the joke, and I see that they are a lovely couple of chaps, but ‘talented’?

And Susan Boyle. Over 100m hits on YouTube? She is a chorus show singer. No more. Compared to the London Musical singers, she is very average,. Check out Steve Balsamo (from JC Superstar on YT), and see what a real show singer can do.

Sorry about the rant, but these ‘talent’ shows upset me. They promote averageness. Worse they promote the cult of Fame that has turned our TV sets into platforms for mediocrity.

  54. Rasputin says:

Hi Raddy, couldn’t agree more about BGT. Funnily enough, the one that’s got my goat the most is the saxophonist. He’s been hailed as ‘brilliant’, ‘hugely talented’ etc etc and he hasn’t played anything at all technically challenging – seems like his only talent is to hold onto a note. There must be thousands of musicians throughout the country who are totally exhasperated at the adulation heaped on such an average musician….. its all hype – but it does get us talking about the program so I’m sure its a success int the producer’s eyes and more money in the bank for SC.

  55. Big Raddy says:

This is a link to Steve Balsamo. Worth a watch to the end (though my girlfriend hates the falsetto).

Balsamo is Welsh (we all have our burdens to carry!) and now has a band called The Storys – who are excellent , and soon to play in London. They are little like a Welsh Eagles. and are Bob Harris’s fave band.

Absolutely right about the sax player (just watched him). Average.

  56. Rasputin says:

Yes that’s a very impressive vocal performance – a class apart from the welsh male soprano on BGT last night …. Greg Pritchard – he’s a thoroughly nice fellow, but once you’ve go over the shock factor of his incredibly high voice, it just becomes a bit of a freak show.

  57. kelsey says:

    Morning all,

re BGT, i thought it was disgusting that the poor juggler was told categorically by Amanda that you only get one chance of 2 minutes, yet the symphony vote allowed a 10 year old girl to have the rules re written. The mother must take some if not all of the blame for letting it continue. It was like a car crash waiting to happen.i feel sorry for gregg, regardless of talent or not,he stood no chance in the play off.

So what happens tonight if Holly breaks down again or doesn’t win.Mentally it could have a devasting effect.
it’s meant to be a bit of fun variety show, and last nast was pathetic.

Now to the result, will Susan Boyle win,she appears to be cracking up and the media build her up into a superstar and then a few days later try anyway to disgrace her.A boy dancer won it last year,so it will be interesting to see how it pans out.

  58. kelsey says:

    my spelling is awful,sorry.

  59. Rasputin says:

    Morning Kelsey,

Do you get the feeling that a lot of contestants are actually ‘not quite right’ in the head and the show can be a bit cruel. Susan Boyle, is somewhat ‘strange’, I agree that the little girl that just kept blubbering was a bit nauseating – should a 10 year old be put through that anyway?

  60. kelsey says:

    Hi Rasputin,

you have to remember these people are literally plucked from the streets, and the media attention is huge and perhaps they think they are superstars, not really not quite right in the head.

Many famous people in the pop world couldn’t handle it over a much longer period, hendrix,Joplin,Moon etc.

What i was trying to say is that they moved the goalposts last night, and they make the rules about age.The boy who won was very composed, had charisma, but maybe they will learn that this is reaaly a show to be presented to the Queen and kids and animals just don’t work.

  61. peachesgooner says:

I have a great video of peggysue from a live radio session on thursday that I’m trying to upload – might need some help……….

  62. peachesgooner says:

    Aha – I think I may have cracked it……

  63. peachesgooner says:

    I wish I was on my way to Wembley 😦 😦 😦

  64. Rasputin says:

Very impressive clip peaches – nice tight harmonies. In a few year’s time, when they’e millionaires, they’ll be able to look after you 😉

  65. kelsey says:

still in moderation on the other channel,i give up.

  66. peachesgooner says:

    You’re on now kelsey – don’t give up 😉

  70. kelsey says:

    don’t mention teething problems,please.

  71. peachesgooner says:

Sorry kelsey – there is a small problem. Nothing to do with you and folks are trying to sort it. Don’t take it personallY 😳

  72. peachesgooner says:

Actually, can you keep trying so it can be tested please.

  73. kelsey says:

still in moderation, everyone else is getting through.

  74. Big Raddy says:

what are you guys talking about? Other channel?

    Really enjoyed Peggysue. Very good.

  75. peachesgooner says:

  81. Rasputin says:

Right, I’m off to the cricket. Have fun wherever you are……

  82. peachesgooner says:

    rasp – I sorted it……..and now you’ve gone off in a huff……..aaaarrrrgggghhhhh

  83. peachesgooner says:

The chavs just lifted our trophy 😦

  84. kelsey says:

i couldn’t have put this better myself

I log on and look at our News Headlines. Any exciting transfer news to get me reaching for the credit card and book my new away shirt? Erm, no. Just another usual day at the office really. Bendtner wants to stay (Because, just like Lazybarndoor, nobody wants him – wonder why?….) Cesc is once again looking through the bars at the good times being had by the lads at Barca (and who can blame him?) whilst that monument to dedication and humility that is Hleb (sic) is considering a move away from The Champions of Europe. Again, I wonder why? Another hair-tearing gem from Wenger (I swear he does it deliberately, he presses more buttons than your average girl-friend) in saying Henry would have helped us to the title had he stayed. Much the same way Arshavin would have helped us to the F.A. Cup Final eh Arsene? Shame you didn’t play him, still, never mind. I mean, who wants a day out at Wembley on a day like this? I spent the afternoon sun-bathing, safe in the knowledge that my club is financially stable. And on the right track. “This time next year Rodders, we’ll be millwionaires……” What’s that Arsene? “Ashley Cole has shown his qwaleetee once again and deserves his place in history?” Really? I’m going down the pub….

  85. Rasputin says:

“Barcelona midfielder Alexander Hleb has suggested he wants to leave the European champions after a frustrating first season at the Nou Camp” hahahahahaaaa……

If Eboue and Ade are both leaving as reports are suggesting, it seems that perhaps the potential loss of players to the ACN could be part of Arsene’s thinking. He may not believe he needs to replace Ade with the options available, but a good ‘utility player’ like EE will be a loss to the squad.

  86. kelsey says:

I thought i better post anything, to avoid the batteries going flat.

  87. kelsey says:

I love this sight, i can say what i want, do what i want without any interference at all.

It has become my own site to practice my typing skills.

  88. Rasputin says:

Its a pleasure to have you on here kelsey. I’m a bit weird in blogging terms because I place more emphasis on the quality of the person posting whatever their standpoint, rather than the content of their comments 😛

  89. peachesgooner says:

    Hear hear rasputin 😛

Rasputin – you did notice that kelseys comments were posted more than 4 hours before you picked them up didn’t you 😆

  90. peachesgooner says:

kelsey – if you can’t sleep, maybe you’ll find some Aussies to talk to during the night…… 🙂

  91. Rasputin says:

Yes I did peaches, but not being in possession of a tardis, I had to respond at the time I read them 🙄

  92. kelsey says:

  96. kelsey says:

  101. kelsey says:

    exactly,….that’s my point

  102. kelsey says:

pardon, could you repeat that please.

  103. kelsey says:

    Oh, i see,
it’s not how many authors, it’s who has got the control.

  125. peachesgooner says:

    Hi kelsey

I agree this post by Rasputin was one of the best we have had so far on this site and therefore its perfectly acceptable to keep posting on it 🙂

Are you hinting that its time I stopped blogging on other sites and came up with a new headline post 🙂

I’ll have to get the carrier pidgeons out all over again 😛

  126. peachesgooner says:

I realise kelsey that one of the reasons its so good to blog on ones own is that ones avatar fills the page 😀

  127. kelsey says:

    I am 😉

music theme sounds good, and yes i am still awake.

  128. peachesgooner says:

How come you’re still awake – dogs not gone to sleep yet?

  129. kelsey says:

  130. Rasputin says:
